MIDPRACTICE

We decided on this name because of how it relates to our project. Learning. Writing. Designing. Looking at film from different lenses. Speaking for myself here, for most of my life, emotional consumption of art has been at the forefront. Emphasis on musical notes over lyrics, cinematography and score over dialogue, sensory sensations hold more importance than reason. Many of my own favorite films are ones that inhibit a profound internal feeling, mainly erupting from the atmosphere of every filmic element fused together in the boiling pot this art form has come to be.  At the onset of MIDPRACTICE, my original and most fundamental wish was to enhance the other side and open my mind up with an analytical pair of glasses.

To say, “Instead of trying to describe a feeling, let’s work on relating elements of a film to life experiences. Let’s analyze a character’s motivations or a soundtrack’s importance to the script. How does Speedy connect to baseball? How does Ad Astra describe familial trauma? In Portrait of a Lady on Fire, what might we take away from its message of grieving time?” So, we began writing. We started with a number of essays that were self-published on our website and read by friends, family, and whomever might have stumbled upon them — those of which we do plan on revitalizing. Now, our original idea for MIDPRACTICE as a printed reader has come to fruition. If this is the only zine we produce then so be it. It’s ours, it’s mine, but most importantly (as a physical piece), it’s yours too. If this is not our only, then we shall move forward and begin expansion, because that’s what MIDPRACTICE means to us.

Never finished. Always evolving. Right in the middle.
